I hate dentists

Seriously, what kind of person wants to spend their life poking around other people's mouths? Evil ones, I'm telling you. They might smile, be genial and joke around but behind their blue scrubs and facemasks lurks pure evil. They tell you they'll give you a shot and you won't feel a thing...it's all a lie. What they actually do is numb everything else, inflate your tongue to twice it sice and then they poke around with their sharp tools right at the only place that isn't numb.
Just look at the whole setup they have. They place you in an ominous looking chair, then place a tray with their sharp and sinister tools right next to you, a classic move from medieval torture chambers, and then they lower the chair so that you cannot flee before moving over you with a gleeful "this won't hurt....much". All the while sporting this diabolical Jack Nicholsonesque smile. And what's with that interrogation room lamp?!
And you know what's the worst? It always hurts worse after they're done...
I'm telling you they might look like Fozzie Bear but they are all Steve Martin in "My little shop of horrors" deep down inside.

These guys have a care for your boobs

Another week has started, another busy day at work, a workshop for 30 kids at the museum that has to be prepared for tomorrow, no time for yoga, and a toothache that forces me to see the dentist tomorrow (after teaching 30 kids about African masks)...

.... it is definitely time for some man candy!

Even though Breast Cancer Awareness Month was already in October I think many of us don't mind being reminded to check ourselves by these guys:

Have a happy and healthy week!

WTF - Destiny Day

WTF it's wednesday again... And it's wednesday November 9th, sometimes called the "Schicksalstag" (Destiny Day) of Germany. It is kinda fascinating how many significant events happened on that day. In a short television piece I saw on Sunday they mentioned a theory that since so many significant, historical things happened to Germany on this day, the fall of the Berlin Wall on that date was not just coincidence but subconciously placed on there. WTF?!? Seriously? Anyhoo, I shudder to think what it says about our national psyche that our destiny day is in November, the generally most uncomfortable and depressing month of the year. (The current year seems to be a nice abberation.)

Pigeons, Pause and Paul Newman

Another week is starting again. It feels like time's flying by. I didn't get as much done this weekend as I had planned but I did use the gorgeous fall weather to clean my windows. And so far my threats to buy an airgun have worked. I swear the local pigeon community sends out scouting units to find out who's cleaning their windows. And then they gather on the roofs of the buildings around you. Smirking. Plotting their evil deeds...

Anyways, I didn't get much more done. D. has brought home some stomach bug and my immune system is working overtime. On the plus side, I don't get sick. The downside is that it turns me into a senior citizen. The last three nights I went to bed before ten p.m., getting about ten hours of sleep every night. But I feel a lot more rested.

Now, if I had him waiting in my bed...

...that would be another story entirely!
Happy Monday!

My life, a series of TV shows

Sometimes it is quite frightening how much my life is influenced by TV and movies. I don't think that I watch an extraordinary amount of TV. There are about 3 or four shows I like and sometimes when I don't feel like reading or going out I like to watch documentaries. Nature, history, science you name it. I think a huge chunk of my education comes from watching TV. I'm also a huge movie fan going to the movies about 3 to 5 times a month on average. Still, it is astonishing how my exposure to this medium shapes my perception and my emotions.

Have you ever found yourself humming the theme song of a show because the situation or the mood you find yourself in makes you feel like your life is a TV show? To me it happens all the time. When I'm waiting for the computer to load a page I'm humming the theme from Jeopardy. When I put on my toolbelt (yes, I do have one and it suits me excellently, thank you very much) it's the A-Team (I know it should be MacGyver, but fixing things is somehow indelibly linked to the scene from every episode of the A-Team when they rig up some sort of weapon/car to defeat the enemy...). And when life decides to throw up hoops I have to jump through I find myself singing along with the Friends song (you know...."when it hasn't been your week, your month or even your year, I'll be there for you"). Lately I got the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme stuck in my head. It's because I kinda feel like that intro when I'm dressed all pretty and smart, stepping of the subway with my matching purse, scarf and gloves, falling in with all the other people dressed for a day at the office, walking briskly towards my desk...

So which is the theme song to your life?
