Making up for last week: More Mancandy Monday

It's been a really busy week/weekend. I'm working fulltime at the moment, albeit only temporarily. Which means I'm also still churning out applications (last week I sent out four). I'm also trying to keep up with my African news project. On top of that, two good friends from out of town whom I hadn't seen in about a year were in Berlin last week. I also managed to squeeze in a summer party and a movie. Plus I made brownies for the office. I really need to get better at this time management thing.

Anyways, the movie I saw was Crazy Stupid Love and I adored it. If you haven't seen it yet, do so. It'll make you feel good. I promise. And not only because of him.

Even though Ryan Gosling is hubba-hubba-hunkadory-delicious.

And because I got thouroughly drenched by the rain today here's an extra treat to get y'all heated up.

Sunday Happiness

Happiness is...
good food, good wine, good stories and good friends to share with.

Anyone who knows me, knows that food plays an important part in my life. Therefore, after a wonderful day with a three hour Yoga workshop and a subsequent afternoon with great Indian food and lots of laughter with my Yoga-sisters for me to go home to immediately prepare a dinner for other friends is not surprising. It's my idea of a perfect day. Last night was spent on my balcony with three new friends, two old ones and lots of laughter. Summer has made a surprise appearance and the evening was nice and breezy. I made pumpkin soup, a cheese-and-herb bread and a trifle for dessert. A glorious evening.

Because the summer has been pretty rainy and I had other things on my mind, I haven't (yet) sprouced up the balcony this year. But I've got some ideas:

Though yesterday's appearance of the summer sun seems to have been only a short interlude. Today has seen a return to the fall-like weather we have grown accustomed to. So the carrot cake I made today had to be eaten at the kitchen table. I suppose the balcony will have to wait...

WTF Wednesday: Movie Edition

I usually like movies that are based on books. Sure, I have my own visualization while reading the book and more often than not the movie onscreen is very different from the movie within my head. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. If a filmmaker does his/her job well, (s)he'll be able to make me appreciate his/her version of the story. After all, a movie is always about sharing one's own view of a narrative with an audience. There have been movies based on books which I find disappointing, but that is usually because I find that the story had not been told well. Very rarely because of the visualization. Sometimes, I even find movies boring that are too close to the book and lack originality. So I appreciate it when someone shares their interpretation of the characters and stories of books that I have read.

But! For pity's sake! Please keep it within reason! Sometimes certain traits of the hero or heroine are integral parts of the story. For example Miss Marple! She's old! That's part of her charm! It's part of her story! She has lots of experience of life! That's how she solves her crimes! Whether as a fragile, homebound old lady as in the books or as the energetic, robust spinster with a sidekick as she was immortalized by the grand Margaret Rutherford! Both times her age plays a vital part in the make-up of this beloved amateur sleuth. So, having Jennifer Garner play that role is just incontheivable... in the words of another beloved character from a book turned into a movie... WTF?!?

Another case in point: Tom Cruise will play Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher the 6'5'', 250 pounds ex-MP of Lee Childs bestselling crime series. This is just sad...
